I enjoy working for Gary between 1979 and 1980. I remember Gary as a man who saw the best in everyone and help them see the best in themselves. As an employer he was a kind boss.
I started as a dishwasher, then one morning he suggested that I try the grill. Found out that I enjoyed that part of the short order cooking.. Have been in some sort of cooking since then.
I'm sorry to hear of his passing..

Marilyn & family,
We were so sad to hear about Gary and please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. But although the news is sad, it is difficult to think of Gary without smiling as we always had so much fun with the two of you at the Smitty conventions. Gary always had a few good stories to tell us and I think that we may have even taken part in a one or two of those stories! He had such a zest for life and was a warm, good-hearted and genuine person. He will be sadly missed.

Marilyn and family,
sorry to receive news of Gary's passing. I always admired Gary's business acumen and had many good conversations over the years. Gary explained equity/stock splitting to me many years ago over a coffee at Smittys when I was just entering the work force...I also remember the blue Volkswagon and the Pontiac Firebird that were driven to Smittys by Gary during the restaurants early years. Gary would always ask me "How is Barry?" when he saw me. A final story...snowmobiling with Gary in the fields near your new home in the 70's when Gary purchased his first snowmobile. Great memories. I considered Gary a very good example to follow in life.
Please accept my families sincere condolences.

So sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. When our business was in the mall we had many many discussions about business and why we were both in the mall for so long. He was a mentor and an excellent business owner. Very successful and treated his staff so well. He was so happy for us when we moved out of the mall and built our business up at our own location.
Dear Marilyn and families pls accept our sincere condolences. We’ve lost a good man.

Dear Marilyn, Sean and Carmen and families,
We were so saddened to hear of Gary's passing. He was a very special man. We have many fond memories of him caring for our large family on Sunday mornings after church. He was especially kind and thoughtful to our parents, Jordan and Monica Herle. He always called Dad "Silver" and went out of his way to take care of Dad. The picture of the big blue Lincoln in the video brings back memories for Gord of servicing it. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace Gary.
Most Sincerely, Gordon and Jo-Ann Herle

I was one of the teens (years ago!) who spent many hours drinking coffee and eating fries at Smittys. Gary always treated us respectfully and was a great host. Thanks for allowing us a safe space to hang and be comfortable. A class act. My condolences to the family.

I remember going to Smittys with my parents on Sundays and Gary being this air of calm in the busy restaurant, taking time to talk to everyone and keep everything running smoothly. Years later when visiting family in Lloydminster we would always stay at the Holiday Inn and sometimes run into Gary and have time for a quick visit. He always had a smile and a was interested in what you were doing. Being a car guy I always remembered his blue Lincoln Continental Mark V. A classy car for a classy guy. My sincere sympathies to Gary's family. John Willoughby Rocky Mountain House.

Dear Marilyn and Family, we are very saddened to learn of Gary's passing. I always enjoyed my conversation's with Gary during morning coffee when I worked in the Lloydmall. Gary was interested in all things as it related to finance and we used to have some very interesting conversation's and I always went away learning more than I went in with. I respected his opinion very much. Gary and yourself have been pillars of this community for many years and his presence will certainly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this sad time.

Very saddened to hear of the loss of Gary. He was such a great mentor to so many young people that had the opportunity to work for him at Smitty’s. Plenty of after hours chats about business life and sports over pails of pancake batter being made up for the next day! He will be missed but so happy to have learned from him! - Gord Spenrath
