Excerpts from the eulogy by Michael Banks
We gather here today to share our memories and reminisce about a lady who was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, sister and friend to so many.
Grandma grew up in the Milleton District north of Maidstone. She attended Middleton School up to Grade 6. Times were tough for her family and she left school to work for local farmers for $5.00 a month. A good portion of this money she gave to her mom for day to day expenses.
In her mid teens she took a job at the Turtleford Hotel. Like many others she attended social functions at English River Hall, west of town. It was here she met Wynn Edwin Textor whom she married November 30, 1939 in Turtleford. They farmed west of town from 1939 to 1965 when they retired from farming and moved into Turtleford. They farmed all but one of these years when they took a brief absence when they purchased and ran the Glaslyn Hotel, 1946-47.
Many of the grandchildren were first taught to play cards by Grandpa and Grandma starting with Kings In the Corner and then Crib. They loved playing cards with everyone. They both loved their dancing, especially square dancing and old time dancing and the interaction with others at these events.
The interaction within the community was a calling for Grandma. She did this through various organizations, as she was a 4-H leader for 13 years, was a member of the West Hazel Institute Group for many years, was involved with the Turtleford Senior Citizen`s Recreation Centre since its opening, was a life time member of the Turtleford Agricultural Society and she received the Order of Saskatchewan from the diocese for outstanding contributions as a long time member of the Anglican United Woman`s Auxiliary - for 40 plus years she got the alter ready for communion.
Her interaction with people spread outside the community as she would help people who she felt deep down needed it. Each Christmas we received something from Grandma that she had made, but so did Laura Latimer, Robert`s wife, as Grandma would correspond with her and provide assistance each Christmas season. It was in her heart to do so.
Grandma did knitting, crocheting, stitchery, quilting, hardanger, embroidery and did thousands of alterations and mending for people in the community and the First Nations at near volunteer prices. She did all of this with a true love for her family and community. Her soul is huge.
