Joe & I were away on holidays and were very saddened to hear of your Dad's passing when we got home. We both admired and respected him and always enjoyed a little visit whenever we ran into each other - usually at a casino! We have so many fond memories of our family get-toethers and gatherings at the R.M. conventions which we will always treasure. Our deepest sympathy to you all.

Jolene, Susan & families, we are sending our heartfelt sympathies to you all. Uncle Joe was an exceptional man and I feel so fortunate to have had him in my life. I will always cherish the many times we spent together. Most especially his famous New Year's Day Breakfasts with coloured porridge and The Sunday Before Christmas Feasts at our house we had while I was growing up. Heaven has gained an angel.

I have many great memories of him from going for coffee with Dad and the other men of main street to the Star Cafe on Saturday mornings, his cheerful greetings that you know he meant, and the Blue porridge. Mr Stakiw was an icon around Maidstone - a grand model of a gentle man! Mom & Dad always enjoyed a chat with him & what a delight it was to discover him on the slopes of Lake Louise!! He was the gift everyone needs - a cheery smile & a 'good morning' greeting! I know God will comfort all of you through your days ahead.

My condolences to Susan, Jolyne and their families on the passing of their beloved father. Uncle Joe was a wonderful man - he was an inspiration to me during my "growing up" years. He was so enthusiastic about life - intensely involved and interested in so many things - beekeeping, skiing, hunting, growing roses, his garden, bird watching, collecting mushrooms, making home-made ice creme, to name a few. Uncle Joe was an optimist - he consistantly saw the best in people and the positive in any situation, and he chose to live his life on the "sunny side". When I was a teenager, he would tell me not to slouch - to stand up tall and be proud of who I was. This advice has stayed with me all my life. Uncle Joe was a kind man. He gave the coins from his pocket to people on the street who would ask him for money. He would offer a bed to the less fortunate who had nowhere to sleep. He was generous with his time, his gifts and his possessions and he would go out of his way to help those in need. I will always remember Uncle Joe with great affection. He was, and still is for me, the supreme model of a truly good and generous soul. May he rest in peace.

Our Sincere Sympathy to Dorothy, and daughters, Jolyne Ball and Susan Teplitsky and their families. In 2007, when Joe and Dorothy moved to Saskatoon, he stopped in at the Credit Union with his "Good Morning" greeting and shared with each of the MSRs (Tellers) a little silver nickel that were minted from 1850 to 1921. My nickel is dated 1913. The story behind the nickels...."When Joe and Thelma decided the raise their family, they gathered enough of these small 5 cent coins to buy a baby carriage." I treasure this nickel and keep it alongside my own father's coin collection.
