I am sorry for your loss. Losing someone we love is never easy, and it can be especially difficult when that person was an important part of our lives. Ferne was a special lady who brought so much joy and comfort to others through her love of cooking and family. She will be deeply missed, but her influence and her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.
From an article that I wrote about Ferne in the Western Producer:
Passing on Family Favourites:
Ferne Abrosimoff loves to cook. She is one of those great home cooks that is so at ease in the kitchen. Everything looks natural and effortless, even when she is surrounded by grandchildren and 7 adults; all eager to learn her culinary secrets.
Sharing culinary secrets was the inspiration behind Grandma Ferne’s Perogy Night. We all wanted to learn first-hand from the expert how to make perogies.
We gathered in Ferne’s granddaughter Leah’s kitchen over a bowl of Ferne’s borscht and a homemade cinnamon bun. In no time, Ferne had us peeling potatoes, mixing dough and pinching perogies. Not only did we learn the technique and the tricks but we had a wonderful time visiting and talking about recipes. Ferne answered our questions and shared some of her other recipes. In turn, I am sharing them with you.
When I reflected on our evening with Ferne, it reinforced the fact that good food is made better when it is shared and a recipe is given extra meaning when it is passed on. Part of the meaning comes from capturing and carrying on the comfort foods, memories and traditions of a family and part of it is simply in the sharing.
