Condolences to the whole family. My memories of Bernie start as a young child when he accompanied his father servicing our telephone line(Greenwood telephone exchange). He was always ready to help. Bernie was wise but most importantly a man of his word.

When we were setting up the Greenwood hall for Bryn's bridal shower, Bernie was there checking the hall out to make sure everything was in order. I went over to introduce myself and he shook my hand, and then, with a big smile on his face, he gave me a big hug and said "We're going to be related!" What a warm welcome to the family.

My condolences to the entire Payne family. I would like to relay a story that has always stuck with me. My Mom, Vera Martin (Rekrutiak/Younger) would always tell me; when we were in Bernie’s presence, “ Bernie has always been my favourite cousin, we had so much fun as kids”.
My thoughts are with all of you at this sad time.

Our prayers are with you Moma and family.
Many years ago my family moved to Greenwood area. My first memory of Bernie was him putting me on his lap and saying... a little girl would get spoiled at my home.
Thank goodness he got his wish with grand daughters.
He always was encouraging even when my steer ran away at my first 4-H achievement day at Bernie and Mona'
He will be greatly missed
