Nellie Doreen (Golding) Huxley was born August 26, 1926 in North Battleford, third child and only daughter to William and Nellie Golding. She lived in North Battleford until they moved to her grandparent's farm in the Blaine Lake district, and then back to North Battleford. When she was 11, they moved to Meadow Lake where Doreen took most of her schooling and graduated in 1945. Her brothers, Harry and Jack were both in the air force during WWII. In 1944, her brother Jack was killed at the age of 19 when his plane was gunned down. In 1945 her brother Harry was injured and spent the rest of 1945 and 1946 in an overseas hospital. In 1945 Doreen moved to Vancouver with her parents, and in January of 1946 she began nurses training. She then lived in residence from 1947 - 1949 as her parents had moved back to North Battleford in 1947. Doreen graduated from St. Paul's Hospital School of Nursing with a diploma in Medical and Surgical Nursing in January of 1949. Her brother Harry was living and working in Maidstone at the OK Economy store, so Doreen moved to Maidstone and started nursing at the Maidstone Hospital in 1949. One of her first baby deliveries was her nephew, Kevin Golding. She met Glen Huxley at a local dance and eighteen months later they were married July 12, 1952 in Calgary, Alberta. They stayed in Calgary until Christmas of that year with Glen helping Doreen's father with carpentry work. In early 1953 they moved back to Maidstone to Albert and Ollie Huxley's farm. Doreen once again nursed at the hospital, while Glen hauled gravel for Frank Tuplin. They moved to a small house in Maidstone for a few months before buying "the Foster Farm" in the Forrest Bank district, moving there in October 1953 with their first daughter Dorinda. Doreen nursed for a few years, off and on, until a growing family and farm work required too much of her time. During this time, two more daughters, Joanne and Marilyn were born, followed by two sons Robert, and Larry. Nursing was put aside for a few years, but in 1973, she started working at Pine Island Lodge, and nursed there until 1986. In October of 1988, Glen and Doreen moved into Maidstone and continued farming from town for a few years.
Doreen was very busy over the years with volunteer work for the Health Care Auxiliary, the Anglican Church, the Nurses Interest Group, as well as juggling yard work and many Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren. As everyone looks back, they all recall many family suppers on Sunday nights. The grandkids were all very fond of grandma's gingersnaps, homemade pizza, and popcorn. Doreen loved her yard work and flowerbeds, and enjoyed her many visits and fellowship with bible studies and good friends. She will be sadly missed by everyone-she was a beautiful person.
