Eulogy/Tribute

My name is Hunter Hnidey, a nephew of Morris, and I am honored to deliver this tribute for uncle Moe.

Morris Andrew Hnidey was born on August 9, 1950 in the Drobot district, a rural area near Buchanan, Saskatchewan.  He was the eldest son of William and Anne Hnidey.  The first 9 years of Moe’s life was on the farm that his mom was raised on.  The family then moved to a farm just outside of Springside, which is still in operation.

Public education for Moe occurred at North Lake School, followed by schooling in Springside and then Yorkton.  During the spring and fall Moe often walked a considerable distance to school, or to catching the bus.  Winter saw the use of a horse, a stone boat with a straw bale to sit on and blankets to keep warm for the commute to school.  After graduating from Yorkton Composite in 1968, Moe went to Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon, and received his diploma in Food Technology.  During this time he learned this trade working at the Yorkton hospital, and at Marquis Hall at the University of Saskatchewan. In Saskatoon he met Rosalene, he moved to Lloydminster in 1970, they were married in October of 1973.

Moe began his cooking career making hearty soup and satisfying main course meals at the Co-op cafeteria located in the basement of the Co-op store.  During this time Moe got started in banquet catering for weddings, Christmas functions and other occasions.  At local farms and ranches, when requested, he would cook hips of beef on a bed of stones in the ground, or do a roasted pig on a spit.  He continued catering, as a sideline for many years.  In the mid 70’s he took on the position as the Co-op petroleum bulk station manager.  He returned to the food industry in 1978 when he managed Pizza Delight.

In March of 1980, Moe and Rosalene were blessed with their son Cordell and this was followed by the blessing of Chantel in 1983.  Moe enjoyed attending all the kid’s activities throughout the years, in particular, he enjoyed watching them Ukrainian dance in their costumes.

Uncle ventured out on his own and started Moe’s Place, a restaurant aimed at the downtown and community employees of Lloydminster.  Moe found time many evenings, when called upon, to help kitchen staff at The Voyageur, The Triumph and Trailside and was contract driver for the Lloydminster Times.  The City of Lloydminster employed Moe as a loader operator for a brief period of time.  In 1981 Moe took on the position of milk processor at the Co-op Dairy Producer plant.  When the Dairy closed its doors in 1984, Moe acquired his class 1 license and for the next 17 years went to his last big job hauling propane for Lloydminster Co-op.

Moe was actively involved with the Lloydminster Lions Club for 45 years, serving two terms as president.  Moe was a board member of the Legacy Centre for the last few years.

Many treasured times with family and friends were spent at the cabin at Turtle Lake.  It was here that swimming, boating, waterskiing and entertaining occurred.  Moe would seek for that ever sweet fishing spot where jack and pickerel were in abundance.  Many nights were spent playing various board and card games.

Retirement saw some significant changes for my uncle.  For a few years, he hauled grain at harvest for local farmers, drove truck for stock piling gravel, drove a pilot truck and cooked at a summer bible camp near Witney Lake.  Moe also hit the golf course more often and helped cook at the weekly men’s night.

Tim Hortons saw an afternoon surge in sales, when Moe and 4 or 5 of his friends would meet, they would try to solve many of the community and world problems, success rate wasn’t good  but good times and laughter were had by all.

Not known as an avid traveller, Moe did manage to get to Las Vegas and area a few times and enjoyed a trip to Cuba.

In recent years Moe was battling cancer related issues and other health concerns.  Despite this, Moe remained optimistic in his prognosis.  My dad would take Moe to many of his out of town appointments, and during the drives to Edmonton, they would see and talk about the wonders of nature and beauty of the landscape.  They would also discuss jobs, friends, family and the years flying by.  These may not be my dad’s exact words, but most importantly, they discussed that our temporary existence on earth is like a breath, but eternity is forever.  I am so grateful to the Lord that I was able to know and spend time with uncle Moe, and I pray that the memories you have of him will be cherished as well.

Thank you and God Bless.
