Please share a memory of Lill to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lillian "Lill" Georgina Levasseur passed away at the Lady Minto Health Care Centre, Edam, Saskatchewan on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at the age of 98 years.
Lill was born at Lady Minto Hospital in Edam, SK. Her parents were William “Bill” and Mabel Milnthorp. Lill was the sixth child in a family of nine - John, Margaret, Phyllis, Mabel, Bill, Lill, Mary, George and Joe. Lill was raised on her parent’s farm a few miles N.E. of Edam. She helped feed and water the animals, prepare meals and do housework, milk cows, gather eggs, pick berries, weed in the garden, and look after her younger siblings. Lill completed her Grade 8 at Valley Springs School. At the age of 14, Lill started working for a farm family doing all similar chores she had done at home. She later worked at Lady Minto Hospital as a cook. Lill was flexible and could bend over backwards and pick up a quarter from the floor between her feet. Her family all enjoyed visiting neighbors, picnics at Picnic Lake, and singing and playing instruments together.
Lill met George when he worked at a neighbor’s farm with her brother Bill and had come to her parents’ house. Three years later, Lill married George Levasseur on April 9, 1942 at Fairholme. They started their life together by traveling south to work as a couple for farmers in Plato, McCrorie, and Lucky Lake areas. They returned to Edam in 1943 and rented land and a home N.E. of Edam. In 1947, they moved again with their family, now including Doris and Ernie, to Blackfoot School District, Saskatchewan to do mixed farming on George’s parents’ farm.
George did custom work in Edam area with his crushing and sawing outfits. He was mechanically inclined and built his own power plant, welder, and wired their home. He also enjoyed blacksmithing and made many things including, sleighs, runners, caboose, and tractor cab. George wanted to own a business; in 1958, he bought the Massey Harris dealership (now, Levasseur’s Sales & Service), garage and gas station from Alvin Norde. Their family, now including Donna and Marilyn, moved to Edam. In 1960 they bought the lumbar yard business from George Young.
Lill learned bookkeeping and did the books for their businesses for many years. She enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, and later crocheted many blankets for her children and grandchildren. She loved painting and did many landscapes of all sizes and shapes with oil, acrylic, and pastel which were given as gifts or sold. She also enjoyed singing in the church choir. Lill and George enjoyed traveling and went to B.C., Yuma, and Disney World together. In 2001, George passed away and Lill continued to enjoy country rides with family, seeing wildlife and sunsets. Holidays were in B.C., Ontario, Hawaii, Chicago, and Cayman Islands, where she parasailed at 88 years. Some of her favorite pets were Duke and Axle at the garage, and Ziggy. She enjoyed music - playing guitar, watching DVD’s of Jim and Doris’ pictures, word search puzzles, and watching figure skating and curling.
Lill was very proud of her family and paintings.
