Obituary of Ross Edwards

Gordon “Ross” Edwards, of Camrose, Alberta died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, Alberta surrounded by his family, on Friday, October 5, 2018. Ross was 87 years old.

Ross is survived by: his children, Brenda, Randy (Jody), Doug (Lana) and Corinne (Chris); his granddaughters, Laurel, Erika, Isabelle and Sophie; several nieces and nephews.

Ross was predeceased by: his wife, Laurene; his parents, Ernie and Chrissie (Gordon); his brother, Lloyd; and his sisters, Shirley Landreth and Lorraine Sproule.

Ross was born on August 21, 1931 in Lashburn, Saskatchewan and grew up in Marsden, Saskatchewan. He was an active sports participant as player and coach especially curling, baseball and golf. For over 51 consecutive years, he participated in the Marsden Mens’ Curling Bonspiel. He joined his father in the grocery business in Marsden in 1949, becoming a partner in 1955. The store was known as A.E. Edwards & Son until 1967 when his father retired. Then it became known as Edwards Shop-Rite; thus, he was known to many as “Shop-Rite”. In 1976, after 54 years of operation by the Edwards’ family, the store was sold.

On October 16, 1957, he married Laurene Reinbolt on a Wednesday afternoon because that was the usual time that the store was closed. In very short order, their four children were born.

In 1977, Ross and Laurene opened Edwards’ Variety Store in Maidstone, Saskatchewan which they operated until 1996. After they sold that business, they retired in Camrose, Alberta to be closer to their family while avoiding the big city life. Ross continued to actively curl and golf for as long as he was physically able.

Celebration of Life in memory of Ross will be conducted from Marsden Community Hall, Marsden, Saskatchewan on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 2:00 PM. All are welcome to come and share their memories of Ross.

Private family graveside service will be held at the Wycollar Cemetery, Marsden, Saskatchewan.
