Obituary of Paul Saretzky

Please share a memory of Paul to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Paul Alfred Saretzky (born January 15, 1920) passed away at the Jubilee Home, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on February 27, 2013 at the age of 93 years. Paul was born on the Saretzky homestead north of Viscount, SK to Alex and Pauline (nee Loroff)--one of twelve children. Two siblings, Joseph and Monica, passed away in infancy. He was also predeceased by brothers Nick, Dan, Mike and Rudolph and sisters Minnie and Elizabeth (who took the name Sr. Otillia upon taking Holy Orders). His brother Chis, sisters Evelyn Illingworth and Clara Knihnitski are left to mourn his passing. In 1939, Paul's parents moved their family to a farm north west of Meachham, Saskatchewan. After turning 21, Paul joined the army to fight in World War II. It was not until 1944 that he went overseas to be stationed in Holland, Belgium and France before he returned to Canada in January of 1946. With the war over, Paul went back to working on the farm--first his parents, then buying his own quarter section a little to the north. During the lean months of winter, Paul went to Flin Flon, Manitoba to work in the nickel mine. When he moved to Lone Rock later he would do a similar thing, work his farm while holding down a full-time job at Fargo Oil, later Canadian Reserve Oil and Gas. He stayed at that job until he retired at age 65. In 1948 Paul married Josephine Soroka. That union lasted until May, 2011, when, after 62 years of marriage, Josephine passed away. A year after they married, Paul and Josie had their first son, Larry (Beverley). Larry would be the only one of Paul's five children not to be born in the Lone Rock vicinity. In 1950 Paul sold his quarter section when he received a half section of land through the Veterans' Land Act. Paul and Josie would have four more sons after moving to Lone Rock: Don (Brenda), Bryan (Tracy), Blair and Darin (aka Dean). Paul had ten grandchildren; Paula Gedig, Donavan, Randy, Christopher, Ryan, Kristen, Brandon, Jaclyn and Ricky Saretzky as well as Treena Saretzky predeceased him in 2000. He also had six great grandchildren. The family thanks Dr. Thomas Kerlis and the nurses and staff at the Jubilee home for their outstanding care of Paul especially in his final days. Also thanks to the staff at both the Pioneer Lodge and the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre for providing the same kind of attentive care in the past. Donations in memory of Paul may be made to the Jubilee Patient Comfort Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.
