Mr Morrell taught me Math for 3 years. He was also my coach at times. His nickname was "the Hammer" because when he was cheering on his football team (the Lloydminster Barons) he would slam his fist into his other palm. :) .. He was a great teacher and I am one of his many fans.

Dear Family of Mr. Morrell: It was with great sadness that I just heard of your Dad's passing. He was such a great part of all my High School years. He was always there when we needed someone to talk to and gave of himself endlessly. It was always so great to see him each time we came back for a reunion. Rest in peace Mr. Morrell, we all loved you.

All through High School, Hugh Morrell was our gym teacher, track and field coach, as well as football coach. He was great at what he did and students loved him for his skills, his patience with them and his love of all the sports he coached. I loved track and field and must have been fairly good at it as Mr. Morrell decided to put me on the track team for the track meet that was coming to Lloyd. We would be participating with teams from other towns in Saskatchewan. Our team was made up of two grade 12 students, one grade 11 student and myself; a grade 10 student. Every team has four runners. Each runner has to run a quarter of the track and hand off the baton to the next runner. When the starting pistol has fired, the "first runner" starts the race. It is imperative for him to get into position, stay calm and relaxed and wait to hear the gun fire before bolting, which causes a "false start". Two "false Starts" disqualifies the team from running. Prior to the race, Mr. Morel decided that I should be the "first runner". I was very nervous about having this huge responsibility. It was very important for me to do this right as I didn't want to let my senior team members down and lose face with them by breaking too soon. I got into position in the starting blocks waiting for the gun to fire. To my dismay, I "broke" before the gun went off! Mr. Morrell came over to talk to me and settle me down. He explained that I still had another chance to start the race. Once I felt calm again, I got back into position. The gun went off and to my horror: I had "broken" again too soon, resulting in a second "false start" and of course disqualification of my team! I was literally sick. I just wanted a hole to appear and swallow me up. My humiliation was overwhelming. It was the most disastrous sports fiasco of my entire sports life! To this day, I still cringe when I think of it. Throughout my highschool years I went on to play basketball, football and of course hockey, my favourite sport; all under Mr Morell's coaching. I continued playing hockey into my adult life, most notably in Dawson Creek, B.C. for the Dawson Creek Canucks and Edmonton for the Porta Test Pioneers. The above excerpt taken from Budd Rendell's autobiography titled: The Life and Times of Budd Rendell.

For decades and generations, Mr. Morrell did so much for the youth, the community of Lloydminster. As one of his legion of former students, I will always remember - and appreciate - the many extracuricula hours he donated to teaching sports in every season and chaperoning our Friday night sock hops.

While attending school at Lloydminster Composite High School I discovered I had a passion for the game of basketball. I had never played the game until grade 10 and made it on the senior basketball team due to Mr. Morrell's ability to teach and bring out the best in the players. I am forever grateful for having had him as my basketball coach throughout high school and I stayed in school because of my love of the game. Many thanks for the wonderful years you inspired and left me with fond memories of my high school years.

We would like to extend our sympathies to the Morrell Family. Our first meeting with Mr. Morrell was at the Provincial Track Meet in Saskatoon many years ago when he was our Distirct Coach. After all those years he still had time to acknowledge us and give us the time of day when our paths crossed. More recently he was a very influential leader at our superannuate teachers group in Lloydminster. He will be greatly missed by everyone and was a dedicated leader.

We have lost a person, whom in our youth inspired us with the desire to excel. As our Phys-Ed coach in track, basketball, football he had spent many an hour after school devoted to our participation. In later years every time we would come back to Lloyd for a community event, there was Hugh working tirelessly in the background. A man truly devoted to his belief, family and community he had time for so many. Rest in Peace Mr. Morrell. To his family we can only say we all very much share in your loss.
