I first met Willie in the summer of 1980 while he was machining at Weldex in LLoydminster. I was a wild youn teen with no clue of what I was doing or where I was going but I needed a job. Jack Jardine hired me and I started as a shop hand cutting steel and pushing a broom. After a few months I started hanging around the machine shop more and more. I was facinated with the work, and Willie along with Richard Fritch who was also a machinist encouraged my start. I was green as could be but regardless Willie and Richie took me under their wing like an orphan and taught me all they could. They laughed at my failures and praised my successes, and my world as a machinist started. The three of us became good friends both at work and off. Coffee breaks were spent telling some joke or story, or discussing some major catastrophy I may have caused. I would drop by Willie's house for a visit and a coffee. Sometimes he would pour me an awfull ''Scotch Neat'' which he claimed as the greatest of beverages. I would drink it no matter what and after some conditioning actually started to like it. I only spent a year working with Willie but the impact was huge. My fate was sealed as a machinist and the leasons learned were never forgot. I have been in the machining business for all this time now. Time and distance have taken their toll and I have not seen Willie for a few years. My life may have been different without his help and patience. The big smile and laugh will be with me allways. Thank you Willie.
