Patricia Ann (Pat) Waldorf
My name is Rick Waldorf, and I am very honored to be able to pay tribute to the wonderful lady we are all here to remember today.
Aunty Pat was born March 17, 1932 at Turtleford, SK second child of Art and Dot Barradell. She took her schooling at the River Junction School in Deer Creek, SK.
After school you would find her bringing in the wood, taking out the ashes, bringing in the water and dumping the slop pails.
At the age of 16 she quit school and went to work at the Paradise Hill Hospital. On her days off she would spend time at the farm to help her Mom in the garden, picking berries, or whatever needed to be done ... she spent a lot of quality time with her Dad ... doing chores, fetching cows, or help making a skating rink used by the community. She spent many summer evenings sitting very still watching the beavers building their dams.
In the winter, it was playing cards, checkers and skating on the creek. She came from a loving family of three sisters and two brothers, and was always like a little mother hen. There are some pretty good colorful stories to tell. But you will have to corner her siblings later for details.
August 31, 1951, she married the love of her life. IN the Little Stone Church, where she was baptized and confirmed.
Her and Uncle Gerry made their home in Lloydminster where they build their first and second homes. She worked at the Auxiliary Hospital (now known as the Dr. Cooke) for 26 years.
During their 43 years of happy marriage, they were blessed with seven children: Gail, Brian, Barry, Laurie, Blain, Peggy and Terri-Lee.
A very special part of their lives was the cottage they built together at Perch Lake. Im sure most of us here today had a chance to visit at one time or another. From May to September if you wanted to see them, thats where you went. She loved the wonder of nature and wildlife. She had special snacks for her ducks, squirrels, rabbits or whatever would wander into their lakeside. She had a bird book to look up the name of any different birds. She made homemade ice cream for the little campers and always had a treat for everyone when they wandered down the road ... whenever we went to visit we all hoped it was her baking day ... because as Uncle Gerry would say She had the best buns in the country. cinnamon or otherwise. And that is why we were always warned ... dont slam the door.
She was a very classy lady who loved people and loved to entertain and socialize. Dancing ... oh how she loved to dance the night away. If the party ended too soon, they would just bring the music and party back home to end the evening. If you couldnt waltz or two step you would get a good month of lessons. Jim learned that pretty quick before his wedding...at the cabin or at home there was always a houseful...she loved knitting, crocheting, baking, playing bingo and life in general. She always had good advise and hugs for everyone.
Late evenings around the campfire, when the stories would start, she was always sharp as a tack. You couldnt slide anything by her. If you are going to tell the story get it right.
When Uncle Gerry became ill, they sold their house and moved to an apartment, where she remained after his passing. They shared a love compared to none and they instilled this love into their family. It was a catchy thing...
In 1998, she became a woman of the Moose. She loved the fellowship and friendships she made. In 2003 she was awarded the co-worker of the year for Alberta. A very cherished award for her. She so proudly had it displayed where all could see.
She was an avid Oilers fan and would place her bet with anyone who was brave enough to sit and watch the game with her. She kept on top of it all.
If ever anyone was having a hard time tracking any of her kids for anything, You just had to phone and she could tell you exactly where they were and when they were expected back.
This lady had strength and courage that we can only dream of having ... get er done and get er right. She finished her chemo and decided she should take a road trip to Ft. St. John to visit some of her family ... so Wendy and Gail packed her up and headed across the province. The stories sounded like three teenagers on a get away. Her trips to Edmonton to see her doctor were usually sleep-overs so they could hit the bingos, family get-togethers were so important to her ... our family reunion last summer. She told me she wouldnt miss it and for me just to park her in a chair. Well we didnt really park her. But as tough as she felt, she came to enjoy the fun and laughs.
She was always helping friends and family in their time of need ... whether it was a kind word or hug or some token of baking etc.
She was a good friend, great mother, grandmother, great grandma, sister and aunt and it shows by the crowd today.
In March of this year she gave up her apartment and moved back to the home she always loved ... the home she built on love. It was here on June 30 she lost her courageous battle, listening to a campfire, kids laughing and country music playing.
